Tea Tree Oil for the Treatment of Head Lice

​Melaleuca oil that is removed from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia is commonly known as tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is an essential oil with wide range of applications. Tea tree oil has several medicinal properties and is used effectively in several topical applications.
There are several therapeutic uses of tea tree oil. Few uses are listed below:
1. Acne
2. Dandruff
3. Athletes foot
4. Fungal infections
5. Genital herpes
6. Ear infections
Tea tree oil has one more very widely used application and that is elimination of head lice. Tea tree oil is an insecticide and effectively eradicates head lice. But never apply tea tree oil directly to the scalp
 

Methods of using tea tree oil to eliminate head lice:

1. With lavender oil:

Tea tree oil has sharp odor. Lavender oil’s pleasant smell camouflages the strong smell of tea tree oil. You also get a sound sleep with lavender oil
  • Take one tablespoon of tea tree oil
  • Add a few drops of lavender oil
  • Mix well
  • Apply it to the scalp and cover head with shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Wash hair with hot water

2. With coconut oil:

Coconut oil hampers the movement of the lice and does not let them multiply.
  • Take ¼ th cup of coconut oil
  • Add few drops of tea tree oil
  • Mix well
  • Apply it to the scalp and cover head with shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Comb hair to remove the dead lice
  • Wash hair with hot water

3. With Olive Oil:

Olive oil suffocates and kills head lice. It also softens hair with its moisturizing properties
  • Take ¼ th cup of olive oil
  • Add few drops of tea tree oil
  • Mix well
  • Apply it to the scalp and cover head with shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Comb hair to remove the dead lice
  • Wash hair with hot water

4. With Vodka:

Vodka moisturizes hair and hence is very good fro dry hair.
  • Mix tea tree oil with vodka
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp
  • Leave it for 1 hour
  • Comb hair to remove the dead lice
  • Wash hair with water

5. With shampoo:

This mixture cleans hair, helps get rid of lice and gives a natural shine to the hair.
  • Take ¼ th cup of shampoo
  • Add few drops of tea tree oil to it
  • Mix well
  • Use this mixture to wash hair

6. With water:

Mixture of tea tree oil and water helps get rid of lice
  • Take a glass of water
  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil
  • Mix well
  • Pour the mixture in a spray bottle
  • Mix the solution well and spray the solution on the hair and scalp.

Tips to follow:

  • Never apply tea tree oil directly to the scalp. Always mix it with coconut oil or olive oil.
  • These remedies are effective but you need to have patience and follow them regularly and diligently for at least for 8 to 10 days to yield the expected results.
  • Use high grade tea tree oil
  • Make sure that you are not allergic to tea tree oil before using it

Precautionary Measures:

  • Never ingest tea tree oil as it causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, blood cell abnormalities, and a person can even end up in coma. Remember tea tree oil is only for external application.
  • People allergic to tea tree oil are known to suffer from contact dermatitis
  • Always keep tea tree oil away from eyes
  • Tea tree oil should never be used on small children and infants.
  • Pregnant and breast-feeding women should not use tea tree oil.
  • Patients of hormone sensitive cancers should not use tea tree oil.
  • It should not be applied full strength to the skin as it is absorbed completely and can result in toxic reactions. Always mix with coconut oil or olive oil before applying it to the skin.
Keeping the precautionary measures in mind make the best use of tea tree oil to get rid of the embarrassing problem of head lice.
