Surprising Causes of Constipation

Constipation can be defined as a medical condition in which the bowel movements are infrequent or become difficult to pass. Constipation is such a situation which is faced by every person in some time of life. It is not just the cause of low fiber intake and insufficient fluids but there are also some other causes of constipation which are not known to us. Dehydration, physical activity and dietary habits are some of the causes of constipation... You can find some of these causes below
 
 

1. Under-Active Thyroid:

The main side effect of constipation is Medication. A slow movement in metabolism (thyroid) can slow down bowel function. Dairy products act like ‘glue’ in an already sluggish colon. Depression can slow metabolism and hence contribute to the problem. Some vitamins and minerals, especially iron and calcium, can slow down bowel movements.

Fast food contain high amount of fat, sugar and calories but less quantity of fiber .Chronic Constipation can be caused by eating too much fast food.

3. Clean Colon is equal to Good Health:

Any person who takes antibiotics or eats pesticides processed foods, refined sugar, artificial coloring agents, preservatives, essence, fried foods or free radicals is an excellent candidate for a good colon cleanse. One must clean their colon at least once in a year. Every six months is best.

After cleansing, eating a diet high in fiber and low in processed, refined and fried foods. Keep in mind to drink plenty of water.

5. Hypothyroidism:

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland which slows the body’s metabolic processes—even the gut. Not every person with an underactive thyroid has constipation and nor all cases of constipation mean butterfly-shaped gland in your neck is underperforming.

6. Painkillers:

Painkillers, specifically include narcotics, can cause constipation.
"A lot of receptors for the narcotic class of drugs are seen in the path of digestion, hence it brings everything to a standstill. In general, it’s a good idea for everyone who’s placed on one of these drugs to also place them on a gentle laxative like a stool softener."
Some studies (but not all) have revealed that a higher risk of constipation may include for people who are chronic users of pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen.

Chocolates are loved by everyone, but just think a moment before eating them as chocolate can cause constipation. People with chronic constipation or irritable bowel syndrome are more likely than people without those problems to say that chocolate caused constipation .Constipation is caused by the slow passage of digesting food through any part of the intestine. Most probably the slowing occurs in the colon.

Vitamins, in general, may not cause constipation but some components, such as calcium and iron, can. It can be advised to stop taking the iron [or calcium] tablets unless extremely necessary or needed, it is also imperative to take stool softeners to act as a neutralizer.

9. Laxative Overuse:

Some laxatives are working for the stimulation of bowel activity. Stimulant laxatives should be taken only as directed by the physician. Do not take any medication which include laxatives for long than instructed time by either the product’s label or your doctor.

10. Too Much Dairy Products:

A diet if included high amount of cheese and other low-fiber/high-fat foods such as eggs and meat can lead to slowing your process of digestion. Reduce your intake of such foods, and increase fiber and vegetable to 20 to 35 grams in your diet per day.

Ironically, constipation is caused by depression and it also causes a general slowdown of the body’s normal processes, which may also affect the bowel. People who are facing the problem of irritable bowel syndrome, are closely linked to depression and are also prone to constipation.

12. Antacids:

Antacids are excellent for fighting with heartburn, but some of them can cause constipation, particularly the one which contain calcium or aluminum.

13. Childbirth:

During pregnancy constipation is a common phenomenon, but the birth of the child itself can be a problem, due to sluggish abdominal muscles or use of pain relievers or an anesthetic during the delivery. It may include some perineal soreness right after the delivery, so there is a fear of causing discomfort and can be an important factor in the constipation.

14. White bread:

Replace white bread, white rice, and regular pasta with whole-grain bread and whole-wheat pasta and brown rice. Try to include more whole oats, multi-grain cereals, and whole-wheat crackers -- just be sure to choose low-fat and low-sugar options. Eat air-popped popcorn instead of chips.

15. Lack of exercise:

After having your meal walk for a while. Try to work out daily. Walking and jogging can also help in the process of digestion and emptying the bowels.
