5 Home Remedies to Treat Split Ends

Our dream of long healthy hair is cut short with the appearance of split ends. Split ends which is known in medical terms as Trichoptilosis involves the splitting of hair lengthwise. They affect the growth of hair adversely

There are three types of split ends:

  • The customary end split
  • The same strand is split a number of times
  • Split occurs in the middle of the hair strand.
Appropriate hair care will definitely help avoid split ends. Proper hair maintenance is the key to steer clear of split ends.

Ways to prevent split ends

1. Cutting:

While cutting hair make sure that hair scissors are used and not the regular paper cutting scissor as they will damage hair further. Make sure that you have your hair cut at least in 6 weeks. Also to prevent the split ends from reappearing cut ¼ inches above the split end so that the damage is removed completely.

2. Prevention of damage of hair:

There are several factors which damage hair which in turn results in split ends. It is therefore important to protect hair from these factors which are as follows:

1. Chemicals:

Any chemical right from your hair color to chlorine in swimming pools to the perming and hair straightening agents damage hair. Stay away from chemicals. If you must treat your hair with chemicals then make sure to use the mildest chemical. When going for a swim cover hair with a shower cap.

2. Combing:

Be gentle on your hair when you comb or brush them. Don't brush hair harshly. Use a wide teethed comb to prevent hair breakage and damage.

3. Hair accessories:

Use hair friendly accessories, not the one that break hair. Tie your hair with plastic or cloth bands. Avoid metal bands.

4. Sun:

Ultra violet rays of the sun can damage hair. So protect hair by wearing a cap or scarf while going out in the sun.

3. Washing:

Do not use harsh shampoos and conditioners to wash your hair. Use home made shampoos and conditioners or a mild shampoo. Apply shampoo primarily to the scalp and avoid piling the hair on the top. When you wash the shampoo, it runs through the length of the hair which is sufficient for it. While applying conditioner, apply it to the length and let it soak for a while. Remember hot water removes the moisture and damages the hair further

4. Drying:

Avid the use of hair dryer for drying hair as the heat will damage the hair. Gently soak the excess water using a clean towel and let the hair dry naturally. If you must use a hair dryer then see that you control the temperature. Also do not rub the hair harshly with a towel.

Tips to prevent split ends:

  • Drink ample quantity of water to stay hydrated
  • Massage hair with warm coconut oil or almond oil on alternate days.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals for styling. Use natural options like honey for skin lightening.
  • Tie your hair when you sleep to avoid tangling.
  • Don’t wash hair everyday.
  • Avoid bad habits like pulling hair to tighten pony tail or pushing hair backwards and forwards continuous
  • Use apple cider vinegar to remove residue built up in the hair.
  • Don’t use heat treatments for hair as they damage hair
  • Have a nutritious diet.
Despite of, following the preventive measures if split ends do appear you can use some home remedies along with cutting the split ends

Home Remedies:

1. Egg mask:

Eggs are rich in proteins and make the hair smooth and soft.
  • Take egg yolk
  • Add few drops olive oil
  • To this add a little honey
  • Mix well
  • Apply to the hair
  • Wash after 20 minutes

2. Oil Massage:

Coconut oil nourishes hair and the antibacterial properties protects against skin infections. Use of warm oil improves blood circulation in the scalp.
  • Take warm coconut oil
  • Massage it gently into the scalp
  • Leave it overnight
  • Wash in the morning with mild shampoo.

3. Avocado:

Avocado is good conditioner and is rich in vitamins A, D and E, essential fatty acids and folic acid which nourishes the hair.
  • Mash a ripe avocado
  • Mix olive oil
  • Blend it well
  • Apply the mask to the hair
  • Wash hair after 30 minutes
  • Follow the remedy once in a week

4. Bananas:

Bananas have vitamins A, C and E, potassium, zinc and iron. They improve the elasticity of hair and keep it nourished.
  • Take a ripe banana
  • Add yogurt, lemon juice and rosewater
  • Blend in a blender
  • Apply this mask to hair
  • Wash after one hour.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

5. Milk and Malai:

It nourishes and moisturizes the hair
  • Mix one tablespoon of malai with one and a half cup milk
  • Rinse hair with this mixture
  • Let it remain for 15 minutes
  • Wash hair with a mild shampoo
  • Follow the remedy once in a week
With proper hair care and home remedies split ends can be removed and in most cases avoided. Split end hamper the growth of hair so make sure you prevent it.
