People with oily skin find it very difficult to manage it and always feel as if they are a can of oil. Oily skin is due to excess production of oil in the body. Oil production or sebum production by the sebaceous glands in the body is stimulated by the hormone androgen. Oil produced in controlled amount is beneficial and essential to keep the skin moisturized and healthy. But in some people due to hormonal imbalance and certain other external factors the oil produced is in excess. The pores become larger and the pores cannot hold the excess oil. The pore lining also thickens and obstructs the oil from getting out of the pores. This results in the blocking of pores and gives rise to several other skin problems like acne and pimples. Oily skin has its own advantage that it prevents wrinkles and does not age fast
 

Causes of oily skin:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal Imbalance in the body
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Diet
  • Pregnancy
  • Menstrual Cycle
  • Menopause
  • Oral Contraceptives

Recognizing oily skin:

Oily skin can recognize from its appearance as follows:
  • Face appears shiny and oily after just few minutes of cleaning it
  • Large pores on Tzone (Forehead, nose and chin area)
  • Make up does not stay on the face for long
  • Skin is prone to acne, blackheads, whiteheads
You can take a simple tissue paper test to recognize oily skin
Clean your face. After few minutes place a tissue paper on the T zone (Forehead, nose and chin area). Remove the tissue paper from the face and check if it is oily then you have oily skin.
There is no need to panic if you have oily skin, as there are some simple home remedies, which can help you to easily control oily skin.

Home Remedies for oily skin:

1. Egg white:

Egg white is rich in vitamin A. It helps dry out the skin and also tightens the skin.
  • Take an egg white in a bowl
  • Whip it well
  • Add few drops of lemon juice
  • Mix well
  • Apply this mixture to the face
  • Wash face after 20 minutes
  • Follow the remedy twice a week
  • You can also simply apply beaten egg white to the face without adding any lemon juice to it

2. Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice has citric acid, which has astringent properties. Lemon also has antimicrobial properties. Lemon helps to maintain the ph balance of the skin and is also a good skin-lightening agent.
  • Take one tablespoon of lemon juice
  • To this add one tablespoon of milk
  • Add ½ tablespoon of honey
  • Mix well
  • Apply this paste to the face
  • Wash face after 20 minutes
  • Follow the remedy once daily for positive results.

3. Yogurt:

Yogurt has lactic acid and skin friendly bacteria, which protects the skin against infections and also cleans and absorbs the excess oil. There are two ways in which yogurt can be used.
  • Take one tablespoon of yogurt
  • Add one tablespoon of grounded oatmeal
  • Add a little warm honey
  • Mix well
  • Apply the mixture to the face.
  • Wash after 20 minutes

4. Tomatoes:

Tomatoes have astringent properties and have acids that absorb the excess oil from the skin. The have cleansing and soothing effect on the skin .The presence of high amount of vitamin C makes it a good home remedy for acne.
  • Cut tomato into two halves
  • Take one half and apply it to the skin
  • Let it stay for 20 minutes so that the juice is absorbed by the skin
  • Wash with water and wipe it with a clean towel
  • If required apply a mild water based moisturizer
  • Follow the remedy twice a week

5. Apples:

Apples have malic acid, which absorbs the excess oil, and also helps remove dead skin cells. Apples have antiseptic and astringent properties. They also act as coolants for the skin.
  • Take a teaspoon of grated apple
  • Add few drops of lemon juice
  • Add a little yogurt
  • Mix well
  • Apply the mixture to the face.
  • Wash face with lukewarm water after 20 minutes
  • Alternatively you can simply apply grated apple to your face
  • Wash face with lukewarm water after 20 minutes.

6. Cucumbers:

Cucumbers have vitamins A and E, potassium and magnesium; all of which are essential for healthy skin. Cucumbers have skin cooling properties and are also good astringents and antiseptic agents.
  • Apply fresh cucumber pieces to your face
  • Leave it through the night
  • Wash face with water in the morning
  • Alternatively take some cucumber juice
  • Add a little lemon juice to it
  • Mix well
  • Apply it to the face.
  • Wash face with water after 20 minutes
  • Follow the remedy daily.

7. Apple cider vinegar:

These have alpha hydroxyl acids, which acts as skin toner and moisturizer for oily skin
It has antibacterial properties, which help fight acne and infections.
  • Take ¼ th cup of apple cider vinegar
  • Add ¾ th cup of water
  • Mix well
  • Apply this mixture with cotton ball to the skin
  • Wash face after 10 minutes
  • Along with this drink a mixture of one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with one glass of water daily to maintain hormonal balance.
  • Follow both the remedies daily

8. Milk:

Milk has alpha hydroxyl acids, which exfoliates the skin. It maintains the ph balance of the skin. It is a natural cleanser and it keeps the skin soft and smooth.
  • Take two tablespoons of milk
  • Add two drops of sandalwood oil
  • Mix well
  • Apply with cotton ball to the skin
  • Keep it overnight
  • Wash with water in the morning
  • Follow the remedy daily

9. Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera gel absorbs the excess oil and also has antibacterial properties, which are useful for acne prone skin. Apply aloe vera gel directly to the face and wash face with water after 20 minutes daily for best result.
  • Boil leaf of aloe vera in water
  • Grind the leaf along with honey to a smooth paste
  • Apply it to the skin
  • Wash face with water after 20 minutes
  • Follow the remedy once in a week

10. Honey:

Honey helps absorb the excess oil and at the same time moisturizes the skin. It has antiseptic properties hence it is very useful against acne.
  • Apply thin layer of honey on the skin
  • Wash face with water after 15 minutes
  • Alternatively mix almond powder with honey and use this mixture as an exfoliate.
  • After washing face with water wipe it with a warm cloth to open the pores
  • Follow both these remedies twice in a week.
In addition to the home remedies there are some tips, which also help, in managing oily skin:
  • Drink lots of water to keep body hydrated
  • Avoid oily and fried food
  • Include lots of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables in your diet
  • Follow the daily routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.
  • Protect skin from sun by using sun block but make sure that it is oil free.
You cannot have control on your genes and your hormones but you can surely follow these useful home remedies and tips for proper management of oily skin
