Natural Home Remedies for Head Lice

Head lice are a common problem in children as well as adults and also an embarrassing one. After all it is not pleasant to scratch your head in public or a pleasing thing to show off those nits. These small insects are basically parasites that live on scalp and hair and feed on blood from the scalp. They cause lots of irritation and itching and are a sign of poor hygiene.
 

Symptoms:

Itching and irritation are common symptoms.

Causes:

Head lice spreads through physical contact from one infected person to another and objects like combs brushes used by infected person.
 
Head lice multiply very fast and hence it is important o eliminate them at the earliest. They can be removed by combing but that is a tedious and time-consuming process. There are some home remedies, which can help get rid of head lice effectively.

Home remedies:

1. Salt:

Salt helps terminate head lice through dehydration.
  • Take ¼ th cup salt
  • Add ¼ th cup vinegar
  • Spray the solution gently on the head
  • Cover with shower cap
  • Leave it for 2 hours
  • Wash and condition hair
  • Follow the remedy twice in a week

2. Garlic:

Lice get choked to death due to the strong smell of garlic.
  • Take 10 cloves of garlic
  • Grind them to a fine paste
  • Mix three teaspoons of lemon juice
  • Apply this mixture to the scalp
  • Leave it for 30 minutes
  • Wash with hot water
  • Follow the remedy twice in a week

3. Olive Oil:

Olive oil suffocates and kills head lice.
  • Take a little olive oil
  • Apply it to the scalp
  • Cover with a shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Comb hair to remove the lice
  • Wash with shampoo containing tea tree oil

4. Tea Tree Oil:

Tea tree oil is an insecticide and effectively eliminates head lice.
  • Take one teaspoon of tea tree oil
  • Add a mild herbal shampoo
  • To this add three teaspoons of olive oil
  • Mix well
  • Apply to the scalp
  • Cover head with shower cap
  • Leave it for 30 minutes
  • Wash hair with hot water
  • Comb wet hair to remove the dead lice

5. Petroleum Jelly:

Petroleum jelly too suffocates the lice and hampers their movement.
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the scalp at night
  • Cover the scalp with shower cap
  • Apply baby oil in the morning to get rid of the petroleum jelly
  • Comb hair to remove the lice
  • Wash hair with hot water
  • Repeat the remedy every night till the lice are completely eradicated

6. Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil hampers the movement of the lice and does not let them multiply
  • Rinse hair with apple cider vinegar
  • Let the hair dry
  • Apply coconut oil generously to the scalp
  • Leave it overnight
  • Comb hair in the morning to remove the lice
  • Wash hair with shampoo and hot water

7. White vinegar:

White vinegar has acetic acid, which kills the lice.
  • Mix ½ cup of white vinegar with ½ cup of water
  • Apply this mixture to the scalp
  • Cover the head with a towel
  • After two hours comb your hair with a comb dipped in white vinegar and water solution

8. Sesame seed oil:

Sesame seed oil has antimicrobial properties and is an insecticide and hence can be used to kill head lice
  • Take ¼ th cup of sesame oil
  • Add 1 teaspoon of neem oil,1/2 teaspoon of tea tree oil,1/2 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil, few drops of rosemary oil and a few drops of lavender oil
  • Mix well
  • Rinse hair with apple cider vinegar
  • Let the hair dry
  • Apply the oil mixture to the scalp
  • Cover with shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Comb hair in the morning and wash with hot water

9. Mayonnaise:

Mayonnaise, which is very oily and viscous suffocates and kills the lice.
  • Apply mayonnaise to the scalp
  • Cover with a shower cap
  • Leave it overnight
  • Wash hair with hot water
  • Comb wet hair

10. Onions:

Onion juice suffocates and kills the head lice
  • Peel few onions
  • Grind it to a paste
  • Press and remove the juice
  • Apply the juice to the scalp
  • Let it stay for 2 hours
  • Wash hair with normal water
Remember that all these remedies are effective but you need to have patience and follow them regularly and diligently for at least for 8 to 10 days to yield the expected results. More over make sure that you wash clothes, combs etc regularly in order to prevent the infestation from spreading further
