Home Remedies for Knee Pain

P‚Äčain in the knee is referred to as knee pain. It usually occurs as a result of a sports injury or due to day-to-day activities. Usually proper rest helps solve the problem but in some cases the symptoms and the underlying cause can be very serious and medical advice is required
 

Causes:

  • Different types of sports injuries
  • Overweight people are more susceptible to knee pains
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Sprain of the knee
  • Fractures
  • Old age
  • Overuse of the knees

Symptoms:

  • Pain in the knee
  • Stiffness of joints
  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty in standing or walking
There are some simple home remedies, which can help in giving relief from knee pain

Home Remedies:

1. Turmeric and Ginger:

Both being anti-inflammatory agents hence are useful in reducing pain. Turmeric has an anti oxidant called curcumin, which inhibits inflammation-causing enzymes.
  • Take a cup of water in a container
  • Add grated ginger to it
  • Add a pinch of turmeric
  • Boil the solution for 10 minutes
  • Strain the solution
  • Add honey for taste
  • Have this tea twice daily

2. Epsom Salt:

The high levels of magnesium in the form of magnesium sulphate in Epsom salt give relief from pain
  • Take a bowl of warm water
  • Add ½ cup of Epsom salt
  • Soak the painful joints in the water for at least 15 minutes
  • If the pain is in some awkward joints then try taking a bath with the Epsom salt solution
  • Follow the treatment daily.

3. Olive Oil:

Extra virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal which inhibits inflammatory enzymes COX-1 and COX-2.The action is similar to pain killers. The amount of oleocanthal the oil that you are using is important. Always use extra virgin, cold pressed stronger tasting olive oil for best results as it contains more amount of oleocanthal. You can either add it to your daily diet or simply massage the painful joints with the extra virgin olive oil.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar:

It has magnesium, calcium; potassium, which gives relief from pain and it also removes the toxins in the joints.
  • Take a glass of warm water
  • Add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • Mix well
  • Have this solution daily.

5. Mustard Oil:

Mustard oil acts as a painkiller and also improves blood flow. Massaging with mustard oil daily is found to be very effective.
  • Take little warm mustard oil
  • Rub it gently on the painful joint
  • Cover with plastic cover
  • Cover this with warm towels
  • Follow the remedy everyday before going to bed.
  • If you want you can add a little eucalyptus oil to it

6. Cinnamon:

It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and hence is effectively used against pain.
  • Take cinnamon powder
  • Add little honey to it
  • Add warm water to the mixture
  • Drink the solution everyday in the morning on an empty stomach
  • You can also apply the mixture of honey and cinnamon powder to the painful joints.

7. Fish Oil:

The omega3 fatty acids give relief from the pain. Consume fish oil or fish oil supplements daily.

8. Cherries

Cherries with magnesium and potassium act as natural painkillers. Consume few cherries everyday. You can also have cherry syrup
  • Add few cherries to water
  • Boil the mixture till you get a string sweet smell
  • Strain and drink this syrup daily.

Prevention of Knee Pain:

1. Maintain your weight as overweight people are more susceptible to knee injuries
2. Wear shoes that help you maintain balance
3. Do stretching exercises before you do rigorous exercise
4. Swimming and walking are good forms of exercise
5. Strengthen your leg muscles with proper weight training
6. Stop exercising if you experience pain in the knees
7. It is best to train under an expert trainer and with the right equipments
 
Home remedies aided with preventive measures are very useful to reduce the pain however if you notice below mentioned conditions then immediately seek the advice of a specialist:
  • You cannot put any weight on the knees
  • Knee pains even when there is no weight put on it
  • The knee looks deformed
  • Knee click painfully
  • There is fever, redness and severe swelling
  • The pain does not go even after three days of complete rest
