People are today judged first hand on the look they carry. Outer appearance matters a lot. This includes perfect teeth and lips as well. But due to our modern erratic lifestyle most of us face today the common problem of discolored teeth and lips. Not smiling is not the solution to this problem. It is more important to understand the root cause and find remedies for it.


The various causes that are responsible for the discoloration of teeth and lips are as follow:

1. Smoking:

Smoking is the main culprit in most cases because smoking inhibits the secretion of saliva. Saliva is a mouth cleanser and also protects the teeth from decay. When the level of saliva decreases the teeth are more likely to get discolored. Smoking increases the temperature of the mouth, which damages the oral tissue and results in discoloration of teeth and lips.

2. Medical Treatments:

Radiations and chemotherapy results in discoloration of teeth and lips.

3. Mouth cleansers:

Mouth cleansers which contains chemicals like chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride cause discoloration of teeth

4. Medicines:

Antihistamines, antipsychotic drugs also result in discoloration

5. Fluoride:

Excess amount of fluoride in water and toothpaste also contribute to discoloration.

6. Other causes:

Alcohol, wrong method of brushing, anaemia, bacterial infections also result in discoloration

1. Water:

Water hydrates the body and helps retain the natural color of teeth and lips. It also removes the toxins from our body. Drink at least 10 glasses of water everyday to retain the color of teeth and lips.

2. Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice helps to retain teeth and lip color. Apply the lemon juice directly to the lips to retain the colour

3. Ghee:

Ghee has moisturizing properties and helps retain color. Apply little ghee everyday to your lips.

4. Dental hygiene:

Brush your teeth twice daily to maintain clean teeth. Also get dental cleaning done by a dentist after every 6 months.

5. Foods to be avoided:

Strictly avoid sugars and carbohydrates as they contribute to tooth decay.

6. Rinsing mouth:

Rinse mouth regularly after meals to keep your mouth clean and it also helps maintain teeth and lip color.

7. Chewing gum:

Chew sugarless gum after smoking, drinking coffee or even after eating. It is a good mouth exercise. It keeps the mouth clean and also reduces the side effects of caffeine and smoking. Remember it only reduces the side effects of smoking does not avoid it. So it is best not to smoke.

8. Baking Soda:

Toothpaste containing baking soda an be used to reduce tooth discoloration

9. Almond oil:

Almond oil is a good moisturizer and nourishing agent. Apply almond oil to the lips regularly

10. Proper Diet:

Eat lots of yogurt and butter. Include vegetables and fruits in your diet as it maintains good health and also helps maintain tooth and lip color. Citrus fruits, strawberries are known to help maintain tooth color but excess amount of it can cause irritation to the gums.

11. Best Home remedy:

Best home remedy is to avoid exposure of teeth and lips to the cause of discoloration especially if it is your eating or drinking habit or lifestyle drawbacks like smoking.
