Does Milk Lower High Blood Pressure?

Modern life is full of ups and downs .Man is striving hard to meet the demands of this competitive world .But all this ends up in generation of high level fatigue .The emotional upheaval and stress is the root cause of several ailments ; high blood pressure is one such disease which is fairly common but highly dangerous. Several medications are available to keep blood pressure under control but changes in lifestyle and few home remedial tips can help in big way.
 
Milk is one such super liquid which helps in controlling high blood pressure. Milk has several benefits and is a must for all age groups .It is a wholesome food in its own regard. It is required for the overall development of human body. It is particularly useful against diseases of the bone and teeth as it is rich in calcium. In addition to calcium it has potassium, magnesium, proteins and vitamin D all of which play key roles in human health.
Normally when a person is suffering from diabetes they avoid milk and dairy products with the fear that it may worsen the condition. But several studies by medical researchers have found that people who consume milk and milk products in measured amounts are less prone to hypertension as compared to those who do not consume milk or milk products. Research has shown that people who regularly consume milk and dairy products have less chances of metabolic syndrome ( a condition which contributes in increase in cholesterol, blood glucose levels and blood pressure.)
Milk helps in controlling hypertension in the following way:
  • Calcium, magnesium and potassium in milk help in controlling high blood pressure.
  • Bioactive peptides present in milk are said to contain an enzyme (angiotensin-1-converting enzyme) which helps in controlling blood pressure.
The most important factor while consuming milk is that high blood pressure patients should opt for low fat milk and keep away from the artificially sweetened varieties. Dairy products made from low fat milk can be included in the diet. Fermented milk is highly recommended because the peptides produced by the fermentation of lactobacilli in milk decrease the blood pressure. Low fat milk and dairy products not only help in controlling blood pressure but are also ideal for weight control.
Consuming milk daily is not the only regime to be followed to keep blood pressure under control .It has to be complemented with several other factors like a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and refrain from bad habits of smoking and alcohol. A regular diet rich in leaf vegetables, legumes, fruits, pulses along with proper serving of milk and dairy products helps in lowering blood pressure.
