Treating a Dry Cough with Honey

Honey is one of the best natural sweeteners.       Honey contains amino acids, minerals and enzymes. It has multiple therapeutic uses due to its curative properties. It is used right from skin infections to healthy hair to throat infections. The presence of minerals like iron, manganese and copper helps in building haemoglobin.Infact the use of honey for cough has been used widely from ages. Honey when added to hot infusions has a soothing effect on cough. It has also been found that mixing honey and raddish juice in equal quantities gives relief whooping cough.
There are several ways in which honey can be incorporated for curing dry cough.

Methods of using honey for dry cough:

1.  Honey and Lemon :

Honey has antibacterial properties which helps fight infection. Its thick consistency lubricates and soothes the throat. While lemon has alkaline effect on the body.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon honey on a low flame. Do not boil it
  • Boil one lemon in water till it becomes soft.
  • Cool it and slice and add the lemon to the honey
  • Strain and use this solution
  • Dosage for adults: 1 teaspoon four times a day
  • Dosage for children: 1/4 teaspoon four times a day.

2. Honey and onion:

The compounds in onion help in curing cough.
  • Cut 6 onions into small pieces
  • Mix with 4 tablespoons of honey
  • Boil this mixture indirectly on boiling water
  • Keeps a lid on the bowl containing onions and honey for two hours on boiling water
  • Sieve the mixture
  • Dosage for adults: 1 tablespoon after 3 hours

3. Honey tea:

Honey tea with black pepper is a very good remedy for wet cough.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of honey to boiling water
  • Add one tablespoon of black pepper powder
  • Let the mixture simmer for 15 minutes
  • Strain and enjoy the tea.

4. Honey and ginger:

Honey and ginger both are good decongestants and have curative properties.
  • Boil 12 pieces of ginger in three cups of water
  • Let it boil on medium flame for 15 minutes
  • Strain the solution
  • Add honey and lemon
  • Mix well and have the solution.
Honey being a natural resource it is considered safe for children as well.Infact it has been found that children who are given honey at bedtime cough less recurrently and the harshness of the cough also lessens. Children who receive dose of honey sleep more peacefully than those who don’t consume honey at bedtime for cough. However there in one important drawback that cannot be ignored .Most pediatricians have concluded that honey is not safe for children less than one year as honey is found to put such tiny tots to the risk of infant botulism.
Therefore keep in mind that honey is good home remedy for relief from cough but not for children below one year. If the symptoms of cough persists it is best to visit a doctor.
