Most of us have a bad hair day when are hairs feels rough and dry but for some people dry dull hair becomes a daily routine. Dry hairs are difficult to mange and make you feel very conscious. Excessive loss of oil and moisture from the inner layers of the hair when the outer layer of the hair is damaged results in dry hair. When hair does not get its share of moisture it begins to loose its natural moisture and hair turns frizzy.
 

Symptoms of dry hair:

Dull, lifeless hair without any shine. They appear frizzy and are unmanageable. It can lead to split ends and hair loss.

Causes of dry hair:

1.Hair treatment with chemicals and heat:

Excessive use of shampoos to wash hair removes the moisture from the hair living it dull and dry. Hair treatments that involve the use of harmful chemicals and excess heat also leaves the hair dry.

2. Environment:

Exposure to excess sun or extreme cold can make hair dry. Also swimming in chlorinated water can damage hair.

3. Age:

As you age biological changes like menopause cause hormonal imbalance which leads to drying of hair.

4. Pregnancy:

Pregnancy brings about changes in the hormone which leads to dry hair.

5. Poor Diet:

Poor diet leads to nutritional deficiencies which can result in problems in metabolism, absorption .Al this can have adverse effects on hair.

6.Medical Conditions:

Medical conditions like hypoparathyroidism and hypothyroidism can result in certain physical changes .One such change is dry hair. Anorexia which is an eating disorder results in deficiency of nutrients which leads to dry hair.Menkes syndrome which is a hair disorder due low absorption of copper as a result of genetic defects which can cause dry hair.
Dry hair as a result of external factors like pollution, hair treatments can be prevented by use of simple home remedies.

Home Remedies for Dry Hair:

1.Hot Oil Massage:

This extremely old remedy is one of the best methods to prevent dry hair. Massaging the scalp with oil ensures that the scalp and hair are being moisturized and improves blood circulation. It also stimulates the secretion of more oil by sebaceous glands which keep the hair naturally moisturized. The use of hot oil for massage ensures deep penetration of the oil. Besides the nutrients from the oil are also passed on to the hair.
  • Take coconut oil or almond oil.
  • Warm the oil.
  • Take the required quantity of the oil on your palm.
  • Apply the oil with your fingertips to the scalp and hair.
  • Massage gently with fingertips.
  • Leave the oil in the scalp at least for two hours. For best results leave it overnight.
  • Wash hair with a mild shampoo
  • Condition the hair with a mild conditioner.
  • Initially follow the remedy thrice in a week, and then you can use it once in a week.

2. Vinegar:

Both apple cider vinegar and white vinegar are very good conditioners. When we shampoo our hair the outermost layer of the hair that is cuticle opens up. This needs to be restored in order to prevent damage to the inner layer of hair. Also the use of shampoos and chemical products leaves the residue on the scalp which contributes to the dryness. Both types of vinegar restore cuticle remove the residue and also maintain the ph of the scalp and help fight infections and itchiness.
  • Take one cup of vinegar
  • Add to it four cups of water
  • Rinse hair and scalp after shampooing and conditioning with this hair rinse
  • Let the rinse remain for 5 minutes
  • Wash hair with water
  • Repeat the remedy twice in a week for one month .Then taper the frequency as excess use of vinegar leads to drier hair.
Protect the eyes from vinegar as it causes burning of eyes and irritation.

3.Avocado:

Avocado has vitamin H and biotin both of which are required for healthy hair and skin. It also contains vitamins A, D, E and K and proteins, iron, copper, magnesium and several other nutrients.
  • Mash a ripe avocado.
  • Add an egg white
  • Mix in it coconut oil and yogurt.
  • Apply the mask to the hair
  • Leave it for 20 minutes
  • Wash hair with cold or lukewarm water
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

4. Banana:

Banana is also rich in biotin, vitamins A, C and E, potassium, zinc, iron and manganese. Banana makes hair soft, prevents split ends and maintain the elasticity of hair.
  • Mash a ripe banana and a ripe avocado
  • Mix it well
  • To this add coconut milk.
  • Mix to form a smooth paste
  • Apply the mixture to the hair
  • Wash hair with lukewarm water.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

5. Eggs:

Since hair is made up of proteins, egg which is loaded with proteins is best food for hair. Egg yolk has fats and proteins which nourishes hair and it also moisturizes hair. Egg white cleanses the scalp with the natural enzymes present in it.
  • Beat two eggs
  • Add lemon juice to remove the bad smell.
  • Add almond oil.
  • Mix well.
  • Apply to the hair
  • Leave it for 15 minutes
  • Wash with water.
  • Repeat the remedy once in a week

6. Yogurt:

Yogurt moisturizes the hair Use sour yogurt which has lactic acid which will clean the scalp. The fats in it will moisturize the hair while the proteins will nourish hair.
  • Take sour yogurt
  • Apply it to hair
  • Massage it gently
  • Leave it for 20 minutes
  • Wash with water
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

7. Fenugreek:

Fenugreek seeds contain nicotinic acid, protein, niacin, potassium, Vitamin C, amino acids and diosgenin.It also contains lecithin which hydrates the hair.
  • Soak fenugreek seeds in water overnight
  • Grind it to a smooth paste in the morning
  • Mix yogurt
  • Apply the mixture to the hair
  • Leave it for 20 minutes
  • Wash with water.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

8. Aloe vera:

Aloe vera gel moisturizes the hair and is hence very good for dry hair.
  • Grind few hibiscus flowers to a smooth paste
  • Add aloe vera gel to it
  • Add olive oil to the mixture
  • After shampooing hair apply the mask to the hair
  • Leave it for 20 minutes
  • Wash with water

In addition to the home remedies make a few life style changes like:

  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Avoid going out in the sun. If you must then protect hair with a scarf or hat
  • Drink lots of water and keep body hydrated
  • Avoid use of harmful hair care products
  • Avoid blow drying hair
  • Avoid washing hair with extremely hot water
  • In case of medical conditions like thyroid take proper medical help.
