Heartburn is the burning sensation in the chest. The tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach is esophagus .At the lower end of the esophagus is a muscle which closes after food has passed into the stomach. If for any reason this muscle does not function properly and does not close the lower end of the esophagus after food has passed into the stomach then the acid from the stomach goes into the esophagus and causes heartburn.

There are several home remedies and lifestyle changes suggested in order to control heartburn. One of the most popular and age old home remedy is drinking a glass of cold milk.

Milk is a universal food. It is a complete single food which is loaded with almost all the nutrients. It is beneficial for all irrespective of age. Most notable nutrients that we get from milk are calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D.Calcium is required for bone and teeth development vitamin A is important for vision while vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium. Milk is beneficial in the treatment of several diseases like ulcer, sore throat, bone diseases etc.

Milk is useful in controlling heartburn because:

  • One of the main reasons why milk is considered to work wonders for reducing heartburn is the presence of calcium in milk. It should be noted here that calcium is one of the main components in several antacids available in the market. The calcium present in the milk is believed to absorb the excess acid and hence controls acidity.
  • Milk also has a cooling effect on the stomach.

Milk can be had in case of heartburn in the following ways:

  • Drink glass of plain cold milk to get relief from acidity.
  • A teaspoon of honey can be added as honey is said to be effective against mouth ulcers.
  • If you don’t like milk then you can go for milk products like yogurt which is know to give relief from heartburn
However it has been found that use of milk in controlling heartburn is a double edged sword.
It is found that later the fat content in the milk results in more acid production. The fats present in the milk are said to relax the muscle in the lower part of the esophagus and, as a result, the passage opens and acid from the stomach passes into the esophagus causing heartburn.

It is therefore recommended that one goes for low fat milk instead of whole milk so that the fat content is low and hence acid production is controlled. Even during pregnancy when the occurrence of heartburn is fairly common would be mothers are advised to have low fat milk and low fat milk products like yogurt.

So go in for the glass of milk but make sure it is less fatty which is not only good for the stomach but also good for health.
