One of the most neglected parts of body is our heels. Our heels bear our weight and face extreme conditions, but most of us forget to take good care of them. Improper care and external conditions result in cracking of heels. The skin around are heels tends to become dry pretty fast and the neglect on our part only worsens the condition and the skin looses its elasticity.. They are also referred to as heel fissures. Cracked heels do not appeal to the eyes and also result in pain. In extreme cases there is bleeding and at times results in infection.
 

Causes of Cracked Heels:

  • Lack of care
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Dust and pollution
  • Lack of moisture
  • Improper diet which is deficient in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, calcium and iron.

Symptoms:

  • Cracks and fissures on the heels
  • In extreme cases blood may ooze out
  • Pain and difficulty in walking due to the pains
There are several home remedies which can be used for the cure of cracked heels:

Home Remedies:

1. Glycerin and rosewater:

Glycerin is an excellent moisturizer while rose water gives a cooling effect.
  • Take one teaspoon of glycerin
  • To this add 3 teaspoons of rosewater
  • Add lemon juice to the mixture
  • Add salt to warm water
  • Soak feet in the warm water for 30 minutes so that the dead skin will become loose
  • You can add lemon juice to this water as well
  • Now rub with pumice stone to remove the dead skin cells
  • Dry feet with a clean towel
  • Apply the glycerin mixture to the clean feet.
  • Follow the remedy everyday before going to bed
  • Once the cracked heels are cured apply the glycerin mixture to the heels everyday after bath to prevent the cracking of heels in future.

2. Massaging with oil:

Coconut oil moisturizes the feet and also has antibacterial properties .Olive oil is also an excellent moisturizer.
  • Mix equal quantities of coconut oil and olive oil
  • Wash feet and pat dry gently with a clean towel
  • Massage the mixture of oil gently on the cracked heels before bedtime
  • Wear socks and go to bed
  • Follow the remedy till you get relief from cracked heels

3. Fruit Pack:

Fruits like banana, papaya, avocado, coconut have enzymes which give relief from cracked heels and they also moisturize the feet.
  • Mash banana, papaya and avocado
  • Add flesh of fresh coconut
  • Blend it to a smooth mixture
  • Apply this fruit pack to the cracked heels
  • Leave it for 20 minutes
  • Wash with water
  • Follow the remedy everyday till you get relief from cracked heels.

4. Milk and Honey:

Exfoliate feet with milk and honey mixture to get relief from cracked heels. Milk is a good cleansing and moisturizing agent while honey too is a god moisturizing agent.
  • Take 2 cups honey in a tub
  • To it add 4 cups of milk
  • Mix well
  • Soak feet for 20 an hour in this mixture
  • Massage feet while they are still in the tub for 10 minutes
  • Wash with lukewarm water
  • Follow the remedy everyday till cracked feet are cured.

5. Neem and turmeric remedy:

If you have bleeding heels this remedy is very good for such worsened condition of heels.Neem and turmeric both have antibacterial and healing properties which helps in curing cracked heels.
  • Take a few neem leaves
  • Add water and grind it to a smooth paste
  • Add a little turmeric powder
  • Mix well
  • Apply the paste to the cracked heels
  • Leave it for half an hour
  • Wash with lukewarm water
  • Follow the remedy once or twice daily depending on the condition of the heels

6. Rice Flour, honey and apple cider vinegar scrub:

Coarse rice flour helps remove the dead skin cells. Honey has moisturizing properties and apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties.
  • Soak feet in lukewarm water for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Wipe dry with a clean towel
  • Mix coarse rice flour, honey and apple cider vinegar to a smooth mixture.
  • Apply it to the feet
  • Rub gently to remove the dead skin cells.
  • Massage for 15 minutes
  • Wash with lukewarm water
  • Follow the remedy till you get relief from cracked heels

7. Wax and mustard oil treatment:

If the cracked heels are in very bad shape and have wide fissures then an ointment is required to cure it. The combination of wax and mustard oil does the work of ointment. Preferably use paraffin wax. If you do not have paraffin wax then use the wax of a white candle.
  • Heat a cup mustard oil in a pan
  • Add 2 tablespoons of wax.
  • Heat and stir till you get a paste like consistency
  • Take the mixture off the flame.
  • Let it cool a little
  • When the mixture is lukewarm and you feel that your feet can bear the heat apply the mixture to the cracked feet.
  • Wear socks
  • Follow the remedy till you get relief from cracked heels.

8. White Vinegar:

White vinegar makes the feet soft. But it should not be applied directly as it can make heels drier.
  • Mix ¼ th cup of white vinegar with ¾ th cups of water
  • Soak feet in the mixture for strictly 5 to 10 minutes only
  • Scrub the feet gently while it is soaked
  • Wash with normal water
  • Dry gently with a clean towel
  • Follow the remedy only once a week

9. Lemon Juice:

The acidic action of lemon juice helps to remove the dead skin cells and which helps in the growth of new skin. It also has cleansing and bleaching action.
There are three ways in which we can use lemon:
  1. Simply cut the lemon and rub the half piece to the feet .Gently scrub to remove the dead skin cells
  2. Add lemon juice to warm water. Soak feet for 20 minutes and then wash feet with normal water.
  3. Mix lemon juice with papaya pulp and apply to feet and wash with water after 20 minutes.

10. Aloe Vera,basil and turmeric powder:

Aloe vera gel gives relief from cracked heels as it has moisturizing properties. Turmeric has healing properties while basil has antimicrobial properties. Hence it helps in curing cracked heels in diabetic patients as well.
  • Make a paste of basil leaves
  • Ad turmeric powder and camphor powder
  • Now add aloe vera gel
  • Mix well
  • Apply to the feet
  • Wash with water after 20 minutes
  • Follow the remedy everyday till you get relief from cracked heels
Along with the above remedies make sure to take a nutritious diet which is rich in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, calcium and iron. Protect your feet from extreme weather conditions and also from dust and pollution. Keep the digestive tract cool so that you get relief from cracked heels by having a mixture of amla powder and sugar thrice daily. You can also have a mixture of roasted cumin seeds powder, roasted coriander powder and sugar thrice daily. Cracked heels are curable just pamper your heels a little and follow the home remedies consistently.
