The urinary tract which is an important part of the excretory system consists of several important parts:

  • Two bean shaped kidneys I the abdomen and their function is to filter blood and remove the excess water, urea, potassium, urea and other material which I then thrown out of the body in the form of urine.
  • Two thin tubes called ureters which carry the urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder.
  • Urinary bladder is a sac in the pelvis. In women it is front of the uterus and in men it is above the prostrate gland
  • Urethra is the tube which is serves as the outlet to pass out the urine from the bladder. In women the urethra is shorter as compared to men.
Urinary tract infection occurs when the urinary bladder and/or its tubes get attacked by bacteria. Urinary tract infections (UTI) occur in both men and women but it is more common in women. Treatment of urinary tract infection is a must because if the infection spreads further it can damage the kidneys.

Causes of urinary tract infections:

  • Holding urine for long
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Blockages due to kidney stones which makes the passage of urine from the bladder difficult
  • Menopause
  • The use of condoms
  • Poor hygiene
  • Diabetes

Symptoms of UTI:

  • Burning sensation while passing urine
  • Increase in the frequency of urinating with only small amounts of urine being passed out

  • Take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
  • Add 1 cup of water
  • Add a little lemon juice and honey
  • Drink the mixture twice daily

2. Amla:

Amla has vitamin C which prevents the growth of bacteria
  • Take a cup of water
  • Add amla powder
  • Add a little turmeric powder
  • Boil till all the water evaporates
  • Eat the residue thrice daily for three to five days.

3. Cranberry Juice:

Cranberry has antibiotic property and has compound proanthocyanidins which does not allow bacteria to reach the urethra. Drink cranberry juice twice daily. If you are suffering from UTI then drink it thrice daily. Drink unsweetened juice

4. Baking Soda:

Baking soda reduces the acidity of the urine and gives relief from pain.
  • Take a glass of water
  • Add baking soda
  • Mix well
  • Drink this solution once daily

5. Tea Tree Oil:

Tea tree oil due to its antibacterial properties helps control UTI.
  • Mix 10 drops of tea tree oil in water
  • Wash the urethra with this water daily

6. Blueberries:

The antioxidants boost the immune system and prevent the production of bacteria. Eat fresh blueberries everyday. Blueberry juice is also beneficial.

7. Pineapple:

The compound bromelain in pineapple has anti inflammatory properties, which help reduce UTI. Eat fresh pineapple or pineapple juice. Refrain from canned varieties as it has preservatives.

Some important tips for fighting UTI:

  • Use a hot water compress to get relief from pain. Also the pressure on the bladder is reduced. It also decreases the infection
  • Avoid chocolates, caffeine, aerated drinks and citrus fruits
  • Eat lots of cucumbers as it has high water content
  • Drink water after intercourse
  • Clean vaginal and rectal areas
