7 Simple Steps to Cure Acidity

All of us at some point in our life have experienced the uneasiness caused due to acidity. Acids are produces in our stomach for the digestion of food.
When these acids are produced in excess it results in burning sensation in chest and stomach, discomfort in the form of gases, flatulence.

Causes of acidity:

  • Eating oily and spicy foods is one of the prime reasons for acidity. Over eating also leads to acidity. At the same time not eating for long hours causes’ acidity.
  • Stress and erratic work schedules which in turn effects eating habits.
  • Smoking and alcoholism.
  • Certain medicines like anti inflammatory drugs.

Symptoms of acidity :

The symptoms of acidity are:
  • Burning sensation in stomach,throat,chest
  • Belching
  • Restlessness and nausea.
  • Indigestion and constipation
  • In severe cases acidity can lead to ulcers in the stomach.

Prevention of acidity:

Acidity can be easily avoided by making certain life style changes:

  • Avoid eating spicy oily food..Eat at regular intervals but don’t overeat. Eating large quantities at one sitting results in large amount of acid production which in turn causes acidity.
  • Exercise and yoga helps improve digestion and helps keep acidity at bay.
  • Consume dinner at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
  • Refrain from citrus fruits as they are acidic in nature; instead opt for fruits like banana and apple.
  • Try to lead a stress free life.
  • Avoid steroids and anti inflammatory drugs.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

Home Remedies for Acidity:

Anta acids are available in the markets which do give relief from acidity but there are some home remedies which help reduce acidity significantly

1. Banana:

Banana has potassium which gives relief from acidity. Eating banana regularly also reduces the risk of ulcer formation. So make it a point to consume banana everyday.

2. Ginger:

Ginger is an anti inflammatory and anti ulcer food .It improves gastric mobility.
  • Take a cup of water
  • Grate ginger in it
  • Boil it for 10 minutes
  • Strain, cool and drink the mixture to get relief from acidity.

3. Amla:

Amla is very effective against acidity. It balances the digestive juices and cleans the intestine. Best thing about amla is that it does not loose its properties after drying.
  • Eat fresh amla everyday in the morning for best results.
  • You can also cut fresh amla into small pieces
  • Add a little salt and grated ginger to it.
  • Mix well
  • Dry this in the sun.
  • Store it in an air tight container.
  • You can eat a few pieces from it when ever you are attacked by acidity.

4. Cold Milk:

Calcium present in milk absorbs the excess acids and gives relief from acidity. Have a glass of cold milk to get instant relief from acidity.

5. Fennel:

Fennel protects the inner lining of stomach, has haling properties and is also useful against constipation. Make it a habit to chew a little fennel after meals. It acts as a mouth freshener and also protects against acidity.

6. Cardamom:

It protects the inner lining of the stomach and has a cooling effect on the stomach.
  • Add a little cardamom to milk.
  • Boil it for some time.
  • Cool and drink it for relief from acidity.

7. Buttermilk with cumin powder:

The lacto bacillus bacteria present in buttermilk gives relief from acidity. Cumin seeds give relief from flatulence, nausea and indigestion
  • Roast a few cumin seeds.
  • Grind it to a fine powder.
  • Take yogurt in a bowl.
  • To it add the cumin powder and little salt.
  • Add cold water to the above mixture.
  • Blend it to get a cool glass of buttermilk.

8. Mint Leaves:

Mint leaves soothing effect. They control heartburn and acidity.
  • You can chew a few mint leaves to get relief from acidity.
  • Alternatively you can take a few mint leaves.
  • To it add water.
  • Blend it
  • Strain the mixture.
  • Drink the liquid for curing acidity.

9. Watermelon:

Watermelon has cooling effect on the stomach due to the high water content. It reduces acidity.
  • You can simply have few pieces of water melon or have a glass of water melon juice.
  • For the juice put a few pieces of water melon to the blender
  • Blend it
  • Ad a little ice, salt and few sprigs of mint leaves to prepare tasty juice.

10. Basil Leaves:

Basil leaves reduce the nausea and burning sensation caused by acidity. Make it a point to chew few basil leaves everyday in the morning to get relief from acidity.
  • Take water, sugar and few basil leaves in a container.
  • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Cool and drink the mixture for relief from acidity.
