Cracked lips are the term used for dry lips, which occurs due to factors like weather, licking of lips etc. Cracked lips are also known as chapped lips. This is not a serious ailment but it does not appear appealing to the eyes and involves pain and at times bleeding in tiny amounts. Cracked lips are of common occurrence and all of us have gone through it. Lack of moisture is the main reason for cracking of lips. Lips do not contain oil glands and hence are more vulnerable to drying and cracking. In some cases a more severe form cracked lips may develop which is know as “Cheilitis” which involves cracking of lip at the corners.
 

Causes of Cracked Lips:

Any factor that robs the lips of its moisture contributes to cracking of lips.
  • Air is less humid in winter which causes cracking lips
  • In summer the heat of the sun is contributing factor
  • Excessive licking of lips also results in cracked lips as the saliva removes moisture.
  • Medications like vitamin A, chemotherapy drugs, and medicines containing lithium
  • Dehydration
  • Alcoholism also results in dehydration, which can cause cracked lips.

Symptoms:

  • Dryness
  • Sores
  • Bleeding
  • Cracking and flaking
  • Swelling

Home remedies for cracked lips:

1. Rosewater and honey:

Rosewater has a cooling effect while honey is a natural moisturizer
  • Take a little rosewater
  • Add a little honey to it
  • Mix well
  • Apply this mixture to the lips
  • Follow the remedy twice daily

2. Cucumber juice:

Cucumber has cooling and moisturizing properties.
  • Peel a cucumber
  • Grate it
  • Extract its juice
  • Apply the juice to the cracked lips
  • Wash after 20 minutes with water
  • Follow the remedy twice daily.

3. Aloe vera:

The gel from aloe vera leaf is a natural moisturizer.
  • Refrigerate leaf of aloe vera
  • Take the gel
  • Apply it directly to the lips
  • Let it dry
  • Wash with water after 15 minutes

4. Ghee:

Clarified butter or ghee is a very good moisturizer. Apply some ghee to the chapped lips thrice daily to get relief from cracked lips.

5. Home made lip balm:

You can prepare your own home made lip balm for cracked lips.
  • Take 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
  • To this add ½ teaspoon of vitamin E oil
  • Add a little of petroleum jelly
  • Mix well
  • Apply this mixture to the affected part

6. Neem leaves:

Applying the juice of neem leaves gives relief by destroying the infection causing bacteria.

Tips for cracked lips:

  • Drink sufficient quantity of water to remove the toxins from the body and to keep it hydrated
  • Licking of lips should be avoided as the saliva evaporates fast and lips become dry.
  • Protect your lips from extreme weather conditions by applying lip balm.
  • Avoid breathing through mouth as it will make your lips dry.
  • Avoid cosmetic products that contain chemicals, which can cause allergies and irritation to the lips.
  • Avoid very hot or chlorinated water.
If the home remedies and tips do not improve the condition of the lips then see a dermatologist. Especially if the situation gets aggravated and there are symptoms of Cheilitis whereby there is cracking of lips at corners, ulcers, lips are red in color etc. Cracked lips are curable. Just a little care is all that you need to avoid it
