ell.Due to its efficiency in curing scalp infections, castor oil is widely used in dandruff treatment. The reason for castor oil’s effectiveness against dandruff is as follows:
  • Castor oil has ricinoleic acid, which has antibacterial properties and ricin, which has antifungal properties. As a result castor oil protects the scalp against bacterial and fungal infections, which are one of the reasons for dandruff in our scalp.
  • Castor oil has omega9 fatty acids and Vitamin E, which moisturize the scalp and hence protect it against dandruff and also gives soft and silky hair.
Castor oil not only reduces dandruff, but its conditioning properties also make it effective on split ends and gives beautiful hair.

Procedures to apply castor oil to hair:

Method 1:

  • Pour castor oil in a bowl. Due to castor oil’s high density it is very thick which makes its application and washing difficult. Adding little coconut oil or almond oil reduces the thickness of castor oil.
  • Warm the mixture slightly by holding the bowl containing the oil mixture in a container containing warm water.
  • Massage the oil gently into the scalp.
  • Leave the oil in the hair overnight for maximum results.
  • Wash with a mild shampoo next day morning.

Method 2:

  • Mix castor oil, olive oil and lemon juice in a bowl. Lemon has antioxidant properties and also helps in fighting infections and olive oil is a good moisturizer.
  • Apply the mixture to hair.
  • Leave it for 30 minutes.
  • Wash hair with a mild shampoo.

Method 3:

  • Mix castor oil, aloe vera gel, honey and lemon juice. Aloe vera gel has a soothing effect on the scalp and like, lemon juice, aloe vera also helps fight infection.
  • Apply the mixture to hair.
  • Leave it for 30 minutes.
  • Wash with a mild shampoo.
The effectiveness will be visible only after treatment of hair with castor oil is carried out at least 7 to 8 times. So following the treatment regularly is very important. Make sure that you use only pure castor oil to yield maximum benefits.

Several products are available in the market for treatment of scalp infections, but they have several harmful chemicals, which can have a detrimental effect on hair, besides they are very expensive. It is always advisable to use natural products like castor oil which is easily available and very cheap as well.
