12 Natural Home Remedies to Get Rid Of Dandruff

Most of us have faced the embarrassment of itchiness in the scalp in public. There are many reasons for itchy scalp but in most cases the culprit is dandruff. Dandruff is shedding of dead skin cells of the scalp in large amounts due to chronic scalp conditions and is sometimes accompanied with redness and irritation.
 
There are several factors that can cause dandruff.

Causes:

1.Type of skin:

Dry skin is the most common cause dandruff. Dry skin condition is more frequent in winter season. Excessive oily skin known as seborrheic dermatitis can also result in dandruff.

2. Skin Conditions:

Chronic inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, skin condition like psoriasis which involves rapid buildup of rough, dry, dead skin cells that form thick scales can result in dandruff.

3. Malassezia:

Malassezia is yeast like fungus which lives on the scalp of most adults but due to some unknown reason causes irritation of the scalp in some individuals and causes more skin cells to grow which eventually die and fall off resulting in dandruff.

4. Sensitivity to hair care products:

Sensitivity to certain ingredients like paraphenylenediamine in shampoos, hair dyes etc can cause itchy red scaly scalp.

5. Poor Diet:

Diet which lacks essential fats, B vitamins and zinc can also result in dandruff.

6.Stress:

A stressful life can also lead to the dandruff .Hectic work schedules can lead to neglect in personal hygiene which can cause dandruff.

7. Weather Conditions

Extreme cold and extreme heat can lead to dryness of scalp or make it more oily leading to dandruff.

Symptoms:

Most common symptoms are irritation and itchiness of the scalp and flakes. When you comb your hair white flakes fall which are visible to the naked eye. Dandruff can cause redness of the scalp.

Several anti dandruff shampoos are available in the market which claim to cure the problem but as most of us must have experienced this is not always true and though dandruff may go off with these products we find that the effect is for a short while and the chemical laden market products are expensive and also harmful for the hair.
There are several home remedies which are easy and very effective on dandruff.

Home Remedies for Dandruff:

1.  Neem Leaves:

Neem has antifungal and antibacterial properties and hence is very useful against dandruff.
  • Take few neem leaves in a bowl.
  • Add a little water to it.
  • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Cool the solution.
  • Strain it.
  • Rinse hair with this solution.
  • Follow the treatment at least twice a week for best results.

2. Baking Soda:

Baking soda removes dead skin cells, absorbs excess oil, maintains ph and reduces fungal growth on scalp.
  • Take a little baking soda on your palms.
  • Rub gently into the scalp with fingertips.
  • Leave it for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Do not shampoo hair immediately after this treatment.
  • Follow the treatment once in a week.

3.Coconut Oil and Lemon Juice:

The moisturizing and antifungal properties of coconut oil help in dandruff treatment. The acidic property of lemon juice helps prevent dandruff.
  • Take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a container.
  • To it add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
  • Mix it well.
  • Massage the mixture into the scalp gently.
  • Leave it for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Follow this treatment at least twice or thrice a week.

4. White Vinegar:

The acetic acid in vinegar prevents fungal growth on scalp and reduces itching.

  • Take 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, one tablespoon of olive oil in a container.
  • To this add three tablespoons of water.
  • Massage gently into the scalp.
  • Rinse with water after 10 minutes.
  • Wash hair with mild shampoo

5. Olive Oil:

Extra virgin olive oil has moisturizing properties .It removes the scalp dryness.

  • Warm a little olive oil.
  • Massage it gently into the scalp.
  • Cover head with a towel.
  • Leave it overnight.
  • Wash hair in the morning with a mild shampoo.
  • Follow the treatment every alternate day.

6. Curd:

Yeast in our body can cause inflammation and yeast can be reduced using friendly bacteria and curd is a good source of friendly bacteria.

  • Take one cup curd.
  • To it add one tablespoon black pepper powder which has antifungal properties.
  • Mix it well.
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp.
  • Leave it for one hour.
  • Wash with mild shampoo.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

7. Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera has antibacterial and antifungal properties and is also a good exfoliant .It cleans, soothes and heals and is thus one of the best home remedies for dandruff.

  • Take a little aloe vera gel.
  • Apply it to the scalp gently.
  • Leave it for 15 minutes
  • Wash with a mild shampoo.
  • Follow this treatment once in a week.

8. Ginger:

The volatile oils in ginger are effective against dandruff. When ginger is mixed with some other oils and applied to the scalp it improves blood circulation in the scalp.
  • Grate ginger.
  • Squeeze and take the juice of ginger.
  • To this add sesame oil.
  • Massage the mixture into the scalp.
  • Leave it for 15 minutes.
  • Wash scalp with mild shampoo.
  • Follow the treatment once in a week.

9. Henna:

Since henna reduces oiliness of the scalp and is a good conditioner it can help reduce dandruff.
  • Take one tablespoon henna powder and one tablespoon amla powder ( amla is a good conditioner and nourishes hair,)
  • To it add one table spoon tea powder which enhances the hair colour.
  • Mix all the three with lemon juice which is also effective in removing dandruff.
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp.
  • Leave it for one hour.
  • Wash with a mild shampoo.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

10. Basil Leaves:

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of basil are useful against dandruff.
  • Crush few basil leaves.
  • To it add amla powder.
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp.
  • Leave it for half an hour.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Shampoo hair with a mild shampoo.
  • Follow the remedy once in a week.

11. Coconut oil and lemon Juice:

The moisturizing and antifungal properties of coconut oil help in dandruff treatment. The acidic property of lemon juice helps prevent dandruff.

  • Mix lemon juice with coconut oil.
  • Massage the mixture gently into the hair.
  • Leave it for half an hour.
  • Wash with mild shampoo.
  • Follow the remedy two to three times in a week.

12. Castor Oil:

Castor oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties and also moisturizes the scalp.
  • Pour castor oil in a bowl .Due to castor oil’s high density it is very thick which makes its application and washing difficult. The thickness of castor oil is reduced by adding little coconut oil or almond oil.
  • Warm the mixture slightly by holding the bowl containing the oil mixture in container containing warm water.
  • Massage the oil gently into the scalp.
  • Leave the oil in the hair overnight for maximum results.
  • Wash with a mild shampoo next day morning.
  • Follow the treatment once in week.

Tips:

In addition to the above home remedies you can follow some guidelines to avoid dandruff:
  1. Brush your hair regularly .One of the main reasons for dandruff are accumulation of dead skin cells. When you brush your hair these dead cells are removed. Also blood circulation of the scalp improves giving healthy hair.
  2. Proper diet rich in zinc and vitamins is found to be useful to control dandruff.
  3. Cleanliness and hygiene are very important for health of not only body but also hair. So make sure your hair is washed regularly.
  4. Do dry your hair gently with towel as leaving wet hair may result in more scale formation
  5. Do try simple home remedies for controlling dandruff
  6. Don’t scratch scalp with fingernails or any such pointed objects as it will only damage skin and cause infections as well.
  7. Don’t tie wet hair or leave your hair wet, instead dry your hair gently to keep dandruff in control.
  8. Don’t allow sweat to accumulate on the scalp ,it will only aggravate dandruff
  9. Don’t let shampoo remain in the hair when you wash your hair with shampoo as this shampoo can accumulate and cause dandruff.
Dandruff can be eliminated; you only need to take a little care and efforts. Have faith in the home remedies and follow them regularly to get rid of dandruff permanently.
