10 Effective Home Remedies for Gas

You are in the midst of an important meeting or get together and the discomfort of stomach gas hits you like bolt of lightening. You are scared not only for the discomfort but of the possibility that if you are unable to control it and pass it out in front of people. Many of us have faced this situation and have tried with all our strength to not to become a laughing stock.

Intestinal gas is present in the digestive system at all times but due to some reasons if it is formed in excess then it is passed out in the form of belching or flatulence. It is not a disease but it points towards a possible health problem.
 

Symptoms of gas:

  • Flatulence
  • Belching
  • Feeling of heaviness in the stomach
  • Pain in the stomach

Causes of gas:

  • Spicy food and not chewing food properly
  • Stress and lack of sleep.
  • Infections due to bacteria.
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Excessive consumption of aerated drinks.
  • Overeating 
There are several medicines available with the chemist for getting rid of gas but instead you can use readily available products at home to cure gas. 

Home Remedies for Gas:

1. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon has a soothing effect on the stomach and prevents the formation of gas.
  • Take a glass of warm milk
  • To it add one and a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder.
  • Add a little honey
  • Drink this mixture daily in the morning.
  • Alternatively you can prepare cinnamon tea.
  • Boil a cup of water for preparing the tea.
  • Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder.
  • Steep it for sometime
  • Have this tea every day in the morning.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar has a soothing effect on the stomach and gives instant relief from gas.
  • Take warm water.
  • Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • Allow the mixture to come to room temperature.
  • Drink the mixture to get instant relief from gas.

3. Ginger:

Ginger helps in gastric mobility and cures gas problem. Make it a habit to eat a little raw ginger regularly to get relief from gas. Also add ginger to your veggies and curries.
  • Grate a little fresh ginger.
  • To it add a cup of water.
  • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Let it cool for sometime.
  • Drink this tea twice or thrice daily to get relief from gas.
  • Alternatively take one teaspoon of grounded ginger.
  • To this add one teaspoon of cardamom powder and one teaspoon of fennel powder.
  • Add one teaspoon of this mixture to a cup of water.
  • Add a pinch of asafetida.
  • Drink this mixture twice daily.

4. Buttermilk:

Buttermilk gives relief from gas and flatulence.
  • Whisk a little yogurt.
  • To it add water.
  • Blend well
  • Add ajawain and black salt as both of these also give relief from gas
  • Drink this buttermilk everyday to get relief from gas.

5. Baking Soda and Lemon:

Baking soda and lemon is an excellent home made antacid.
  • Take a juice of a lemon.
  • To it add a teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Mix it well so that fizzing occurs
  • Add a little more baking soda.
  • Now add water.
  • Drink this antacid to get instant relief from gas.

6. Garlic:

Garlic helps reduce acidity and gives relief from gas as it has sharp heating qualities which help in reducing the fire in the stomach. A hot cup of garlic soup is the right answer for gas.
  • Take few pods of garlic.
  • Crush them.
  • Add the crushed garlic pods to water.
  • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Add black pepper and cumin seeds.
  • Strain the solution
  • Cool and drink the soup twice daily

7. Fennel:

Fennel stimulates secretion of gastric and digestive juices and is an antiflatulent.Chew a few fennel seeds everyday after meals to get relief from gas. You can also drink fennel tea.
  • Add a few fennel seeds to water.
  • Keep it to boil
  • Simmer the solution on low heat for 5 minutes
  • Strain the solution.
  • Drink the solution everyday.
  • You can also add cardamom powder and some mint leaves to the solution as both are useful against flatulence

8. Asafetida:

Asafetida has antiflatulent properties and gives relief from gas. Add a pinch of asafetida to water and drink it daily. You can also eat asafetida with banana which is also a good antacid by itself. Paste of asafetida and water when applied on stomach is found to give instant relief from gas.

9. Cardamom:

Cardamom reduces gas and is an antispasmodic. You can eat a few pods of cardamom daily or add it to your veggies, curries and rice. Drinking cardamom tea daily gives relief from gas.
  • Add cardamom powder to a cup of water.
  • To it add powder of fennel seeds and some grated ginger.
  • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Drink this tea at least twice daily.

10. Mint Leaves:

Mint leaves cure’s flatulence, stimulates appetite and cures nausea. Chew fresh mint leaves daily to get relief from gas. Drink some refreshing peppermint tea daily to get relief from acidity.
  • Take a cup of water.
  • Add some fresh peppermint leaves.
  • Boil the solution for 10 minutes.
  • Strain and cool the solution.
  • Add a little honey for taste.
  • Drink this tea twice daily to get relief from gas.
Changes and control in eating habits along with these useful home remedies can help control gas easily. Bring about a few changes in lifestyle like wear loose clothes, don’t sleep immediately after eating, chew food properly etc.Gas is basically due to wrong dietary routine and lifestyle.
