Very often we are attacked by a very uncomfortable smoldering sensation in the chest that is heartburn. It is of very common occurrence. It can happen anywhere and to anyone irrespective age. Even pregnant women are not spared from this fiery feeling. Sometimes it is so severe that all we want is immediate relief form it at any cost.
 

There are several factors that can cause heartburn for example:

  • Certain foods like oily,fried,spicy food can cause heartburn
  • Stressful life can also result in more acid production.
  • Overweight people are more prone to heartburn
  • Citrus fruits also result in heartburn.
  • Alcohol consumption is one of the common causes for heartburn
  • In some women pregnancy can also result in heartburn.
With a little precaution and diet control we can reduce heartburn. Avoiding foods that result in more acid production or food’s that have high acid content can go a long way in reducing heartburn. We should select food that is low in acid content.
The foods that we should consume to avoid or reduce heartburn are listed below:

Foods to avoid heartburn:

1. Fruits with low acid content:

  • Citrus fruits with high acid content are an absolute no for heartburn.
  • We can go for the evergreen fruit banana which has low acid content and is also good for constipation.
  • Water melon with its high water content is also good for heartburn control.
  • Eat amla everyday in the morning as it prevents acidity and helps in balancing the digestive juices.
  • Pineapple contains bromelain which is good remedy for chronic acidity

Oatmeal is increasingly becoming a popular breakfast option these days. Oatmeal has high fiber content and is good for health. Oats are loaded with phytochemicals which help in regulating the digestive system.

  • Opt for pulses and whole grains.
  • Always go for brown bread or bread made from whole grains Avoid the refined flour bread option.
  • Rice is rich in carbohydrates and is good for heartburn .Like bread here too you can opt for brown rice option which is good for the health.

Select vegetables that have low acid content 
  • Fenugreek leaves help in digestion and helps overcome flatulence.
  • Cauliflower is low in acid is rich in fiber and helps clean the digestive system
  • Cabbage juice gives relief from stomach ulcers.
  • Cucumber gives relief from ulcers and acidity

5. Meat , eggs and fish:

  • Opt for chicken but make sure you don’t fry it instead grill or steam or bake it.
  • Fish also should either be grilled, steamed or baked.
  • In case of eggs use only egg white and nor the yolk.

  • Several root vegetables have alkaline properties.
  • Beet, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and radish come under this category.
  • Make sure to have potatoes in boiled/baked form rather than frying.
  • Avoid onions as they are found to trigger heartburn.

Chewing fennel as a mouth freshener after meals is a common practice in India. Fennel has low acid content and is also believed to improve digestion.

  • Eating ginger or sipping ginger juice mixed with honey increases mucous secretion in stomach and is said to be good for heartburn.
  • You can eat ginger or boil ginger in water and drink this liquid for relief from heartburn.

Drinking pure aloe vera juice is beneficial in heartburn. Its healing nature give a soothing effect .It also protects the stomach from acids by forming a coating. Drinking a quarter cup of aloe vera juice 30 minutes before meals is considered to be ideal

The alkaline nature of almonds can be useful in controlling heartburn, eat about 4 raw almonds every day after meal.
 
Consumption of low acid foods helps control acidity to great extent. All these foods are easily available and are affordable.
